Dieting Facts and Myths You Need to Know

It's kind of difficult to lose weight these days, particularly with all of the different pieces of nutritional advice, the different exercise programs and the different diets that are out there for you to choose from. If, though, you get a good grasp on the basic fundamentals of weight loss, you will be in a much better position to actually find success, no matter which weight loss program you decide to go after. In this article we'll explore some of the basic realities of dieting and weight loss that can help you find the success you are looking for.

The idea that all fats are bad for you is really a myth but people have trouble accepting this. We've gotten used to looking for foods that have very little or exactly no fat that it is hard to understand that there are some fats that actually are good for you and that your body needs a little bit of fat to stay healthy. By now you've heard of both healthy and unhealthy fats and this is a really important distinction to make. It's important to remember this distinction before you let yourself believe that drinks like diet soda and that foods like margarine are healthy but the truth is that they are not. At the same time, foods like fish oil, olive oil and nuts are examples of foods that contain healthy fats. So do not run away from all of the fats because they are a very essential part of any diet. One of the reasons that so many people fail with the diets they choose is that they are not aware of how much they eat. For one thing, foods aren't always accurately labeled. There are usually hidden calories in the foods that are packaged and this is why some experts say that you need to add ten percent to the number of calories you think you're taking in. Another reason is that not everybody is thoroughly reading their food labels. Some foods in packages and cans claim to contain two or more servings, which means that if you eat the whole thing, you have to multiply the number of calories "per serving" by the number of servings you consumed. Finally, people who snack a lot during the day are more likely not to pay attention to the extra calories they are eating. When you're dieting it is important to pay attention to how much you honestly eat each day.

Portion sizes often trip up dieters; remember, it isn't just what you eat but how much of it you eat that affects your weight loss. Whether you are eating your own food or eating in a restaurant, this is going to be a problem. It's normal to eat what is put in front of you. You're parents probably even told you to finish what was on your plate, which may have been good advice when you were a growing child. When you're an adult who wants to lose weight, though, it can be really hard. Try, then, to make sure that you cook and serve smaller portions. If someone else is serving you, let them know you really don't want a large helping. If you are in a restaurant that is serving large portions, don't be embarrassed to order from the children's menu or ask them to wrap up half of your portion so that you can take it home.

A diet can be a really good tool for losing weight but it cannot do all of the work for you. You need to remember that is your choices and daily habits that determine how healthy you are and how much weight you lose. Nobody is perfect and when it comes to following your diet, don't expect yourself to be perfect. On the other hand, you need to understand that if you want lasting results, you need to make an honest commitment to taking your diet and any associated rules and lifestyle changes very seriously.
