What a great way to celebrate, see some world class runners and support many wonderful charities such as Operation Smile, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training (TNT) program, the Virginian Pilot Joy Fund bringing holiday happiness and gifts to nearly 26,000 underprivileged children in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, City of Franklin, Virginia's Eastern Shore corned beef syns Isle of Wight Count, the Mike McGreevy Memorial Scholarship Fund and Hope of the Warriors.

St. Patrick's Day falls during the Christian season of Lent. Irish Catholic families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. They would feast on Irish bacon and cabbage, as the Lenten prohibition on meat was waived for the one day. The tradition changed from bacon to corned beef and cabbage beef when the Irish settled in New York and found out about the cheaper cut of beef from their Jewish neighbors.

With apologies to Seattle, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and a few other cities, Philadelphia gets the fifth spot on this list. This is the only city apart from New York slow cooker corned beef and cabbage Boston that held its first St. Patrick's Day parade before the American Revolution (in 1771) and it still attracts several hundred thousand revelers each year.
