Chicago Craft Beer Weekend, May 13
Much like the surrounding states of Missouri, Iowa, and Indiana, Illinois offers several appealing destinations to wine travel lovers. You'll find clusters of wineries in every part of the state, including metropolitan Chicago. Grapes grow well here, and Illinois vintners display their creativity by making a tempting array of wines that are attracting national press.
Preparing for the Superbowl is as easy as tuning in. Before the big game be sure to be in the know. You will be sure to be the hit of the party with your football knowledge and updates. If you did not get around to watching every Sunday pulled pork aga Monday night football, there is a solution. NFL Sunday ticket allows you watch up to 14 games every Sunday, so you do not have to be limited by the networks selection. Even more you can track players performance to see how they have been doing in the regular season. If you are willing to bet on Superbowl Sunday, you can also see the scores, statistics and rankings of all of the teams. Be prepared to wow your friends with your knowledge of the Superbowl teams.
We were immediately seated and handed our menus. Smokey Bones has all of the usual BBQ fare such as baby back ribs, bbq pulled pork pasta, barbecued chicken, beef brisket, etc. I decided on a combination platter or ribs and chicken that also includes two sides. It was only $15. So, I chose the baked beans and cole slaw. Meals also include Texas toast as well.
You see, barbecued food is cooked longer than typical grilled meats. This brings us to the second difference between these two devices - Length of cooking time. You can grill a steak in 12 minutes usually. Chicken might take 40 minutes or so, but it can still be done on a standard grill. If you want proper BBQ pulled pork, for example though, you're going to have to put some serious time in. The barbecuing process can take up to 8 hours sometimes, depending on the size of the cut. So why doesn't the meat burn?
Bespoke Bacon, the folks who provide Prism Brewery with the bacon for their Insana Stout and their bacon jam, will be at the brewery from 7-9pm cooking up bacon, and some bacon infused slow cooker bbq pulled pork pork.
Grendel's Den (89 Winthrop Street, Harvard Square) - Stop by for the happy hour food specials from 5-7:30pm and after 9:30pm at this popular Harvard Square bar. The entire menu (normally very reasonable) is half priced, giving the diner on a budget some great options. Try the Mediterranean platter for steak tips and hummus for only $5 during happy hour. Also, stop by on Sunday evenings for the special dollar menu, featuring items such burgers and pasta. There is a minimum drink purchase of $3 required for the discount prices.
Lars usually goes with the bbq pulled pork Combo ($15) of Ribs & either Briskit or Pulled Pork. I like their briskit, but the pork is more tender. I've had the BBQ chicken here too, and it was pretty damn good also.
Village Peddler Festival This family-friendly 2-day event will feature 175 artisans and craftspeople displaying their handmade Traditional, Primitive, Country, Americana and Victorian-style arts & crafts along the shaded paths of the outdoor marketplace.
Come October 30-31 for a suprise Halloween weekend. Stick around till dusk for Haunted Hayrides through the spooky cornfields Saturday nights through Halloween at $10 for adults and $7 for kids under 12. The ride is reccomened for kids six and up.
